The KELETI ISTVÁN primary and secondary School has its main aim in educating artistically and was named after Keleti István, a stage director and pedagogue. Basically it is a network of theatre educators who work as teachers for theatre and other subjects on various schools. It was founded in 1998 with the help of the foundation "ab esse ab posse" (from the existing to the possible). It was the aim of the school's foundation to complement the education at primary and secondary schools with modern offers in the fields of theatre education and occupational education. With this idea in mind, they started out at the primary school level with artistic education by teaching methods of scenic acting. Their work was supported by drama schools that have already been established for decades. In the year 2000 the school began with the state-approved instruction of future actors.
The school is concerned with all three phases of artistic education (pre-, basic-, and advanced training). Two years of pre-education, six years of basic training and four years of advanced training are based on one another. In this context the main subjects (scenic acting and play acting) and the obligatory courses (training in voice and movement) are taught. Besides these subjects the students can choose from: creative musical training, theatre history, training for dance and physical theatre, and speech techniques. The timetable contains four weekly lessons in the pre- and basic training level and five to six weekly afternoon lessons in the advanced level. The basic level has four basis schools in the capital and four more basis schools in Debrecen, Győr, Miskolc and Szentes.
Actor training:
In the first year of the training both theoretical and practical subjects are taught at the KIMI. In the second and third year the students have a practical placement at one of the school's partner theatres: Új Színház, Kolibri Színház or Bárka Színház. Thanks to the co-operation with Kolibri, the students can also take up training in puppet theatre play.
The lessons are divided into:
Theory:
history of drama and theatre, dramaturgy, art history, aesthetics, history of costume
Practice:
acting, artistic singing and speech, stage movement, dancing
The training has the following aims: analytical reading of dramatic texts, conscious exercise of different acting techniques, the ability to improvise, the embodiment of different characters, acting according to different forms of theatre, role building, working based on instructions, self-dependent creative work, self-control while working artistically, use of experiences of other forms of art, analyses and evaluation of performances.
